Early Life

On April 6, 1972, Ami James was born in Sharm El Sheikh, a city in Egypt; his father was American-born but converted to Judaism three years before he could move to Israel; it was here that he joined the Israeli army and met a beautiful who had also emigrated from Romania, they got married, and James was born to them.

As a child, he had lived in both Israel and Egypt, but by the time he was 4, his father had left his family; he struggled most of his childhood; even though Ami had a brother Natan Shai James, he felt alone.

When Ami was just a kid,  he was diagnosed with severe Attention Deficit Disorder, and art was the only way Ami could express himself; this created an interest in drawing and tattoos, as his father also had tattoos and was a painter.

At the age of 11, he moved to the US to live with his grandparents; he stayed with them for a year and then moved to Miami; at the age of 15, Ami got his first tattoo and fell in love with the whole process so much that he was determined to become a tattoo artist, himself.

But before that, he had to complete his military service, so he moved back to Israel and joined the Israel Defense Forces as an Infantry sniper.

By 1992, Ami began his apprenticeship with Lou, a tattoo artist at Tattoos By Lou. With all the knowledge and experience, he went ahead and opened his tattoo parlor along with co-owner Chris Núñez in Miami Beach, Florida; his parlor Love Hate Tattoos, is also a part of the TLC reality show “Miami Ink.”

James is also known to be the person to bring the tattoo industry on-screen; plus, at such a large scale, his knowledge does not just end here; he also co-owns a clothing company, DeVille, with Núñez and Jesse Fleet; he also has a Miami nightclub, Love Hate Lounge to his name.

James has also extended his talent to create designs that Motorola”s RAZR V3 used in their mobile phones. He has been quite a face on TV shows; he was seen in series like “World Wide Tribe” and “Aloha!” he moved to New York for his documentary of a show, “NY Ink,” which premiered on June 2, 2011, it ran for a year.

He was also a judge on “Tattoo Titans,” he opened a new tattoo studio, ‘Love Hate Social Club’ in London, with guest tattoo artists Darren Brass, Megan Massacre, and Chris Núñez; he’s also trying his hand at investing with a jewelry line, Love Hate Choppers Jewelry.

James has also tried to create awareness with ad campaigns like “Ink Not Mink” and “Love the Ink, Ditch the Fur,” in collaboration with PETA; he continues to venture onto different businesses; his latest launch was of Tattoodo, an online platform that helps people get a custom tattoo design, he is the co-founder.
