He began his wrestling career in 1982 at the age of 28 after training at Stu Hart’s Dungeon pro wrestling school. Haynes briefly wrestled in Hart’s Stampede Wrestling alongside Bruce Hart before adopting the ring name “Billy Jack” in the Pacific Northwest territory.

In June 1986, Haynes joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and engaged in feuds with wrestlers like Randy Savage and Hercules Hernandez. One of the notable moments in his WWF career was “The Battle of the Full Nelsons” at WrestleMania III, where he faced Hercules in a memorable match that ended in a double count-out.

During his time in the WWF, Haynes was involved in staged altercations for entertainment purposes. One such incident involved him utilizing a small razor hidden in his wrist tapes to create the illusion of bleeding, a common practice known as “blading” in professional wrestling.
