All About New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov
Inna Vernikov (age 39, born August 30, 1984) is a Ukrainian-American lawyer and politician. She currently works as a member of the New York City Council representing the 48th District.
Vernikov’s political journey has been far from ordinary. She was a proud member of the Democratic Party until 2020 when she surprised many by switching sides and aligning herself with the Republican Party in 2021.
However, it is her most recent incident that has made headlines and sent shockwaves across the nation. On October 13, 2023, Inna Vernikov found herself in legal trouble when she was arrested for openly carrying a firearm at a protest. The protest in question occurred a day earlier, on October 12, at Brooklyn College, which is part of the City University of New York (CUNY).
The protest at Brooklyn College took a tense turn as students supporting the controversial terrorist group, Hamas, were in attendance. Hamas has faced widespread condemnation for its involvement in heinous acts, including the murder of innocent children and women.
Vernikov’s presence at the protest, openly carrying a firearm, understandably alarmed the crowd of Hamas supporters. Fearing for their safety, some attendees reported the councilwoman for carrying a gun, resulting in a formal complaint filed against Inna Vernikov for her possession of the firearm.
The aftermath of this incident was equally surprising. Inna decided to take matters into her own hands and voluntarily turned herself in. She not only surrendered her arms license but also handed over her firearm to the appropriate authorities.
Inna Vernikov is no stranger to controversy. As a Jewish councilwoman, she has never shied away from speaking out against those who support the Palestinian cause. Her passionate stance has earned her both followers and critics alike.
Inna Vernikov Brought a Gun To a Protest
A Brooklyn Councilwoman named Inna Vernikov, who is a member of the Republican party, got into trouble when she was at a rally supporting Palestinians. She had a gun with her during this event, and that led to her facing possible arrest. People are now discussing if she should still keep her job as a councilwoman. Inna Vernikov is known for not supporting those who are in favor of Palestinians.
She went to this particular rally at CUNY’s Brooklyn College on a Thursday afternoon. During the rally, which happened between noon and 2:45 p.m., Inna, who is 39 years old, was seen with a gun slightly showing from her clothes. The police found out about this and reported it to The Post.
Later, at around 3 a.m. on Friday, she went to the 70th Precinct along with her lawyer and willingly handed over her gun and permit. FYI, Vernikov received her license this year in September. She had even posted a photo about it on her Instagram.
Even though she was allowed to carry a concealed gun, bringing it to places like protests or schools is against the law in New York state. Because of this, she faced a serious charge, a Class E felony, and was booked for it. Laws strictly forbid people from carrying guns at rallies or protests, and it’s especially important for leaders like her to follow the rules and set a good example for everyone.
Before this incident, Inna Vernikov had shared a video of herself speaking at the rally on Thursday afternoon. Even though you couldn’t see her gun in the video, pictures, and videos later circulated on social media clearly showed her with the gun tucked into her pants.
Inna Vernikov was Born in Ukraine
On August 30, 1984, Inna Vernikov (age 39) was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, when it was part of the USSR. She went to ORT Specialized School #41, a Ukrainian Jewish day school.
Because they were Jewish and faced a lot of challenges, Inna’s family left Chernivtsi, Ukraine when she was 12 years old, looking for a better life.
Inna remembers how things were hard during the Soviet Union. The stores often didn’t have much to buy, and choices were very limited.
After finishing high school in 2002, Inna went to Baruch College for her bachelor’s degree. Later, she studied law at the Florida Coastal School of Law.
Inna Vernikov’s Political Career
Inna Vernikov started her journey in public service by helping New York State Assemblymember Dov Hikind. Before she got into City Council work, she worked as a lawyer, helping with immigration and divorce cases.
She first belonged to the Democratic Party but later switched to the Republican Party because she was worried about rising antisemitism and what she thought was a rise in socialist ideas in New York City.
She supports Donald Trump and says her background as a Jewish person from the former Soviet Union makes her worried about restricted speech, limited religious freedom, and money problems.
When she ran for office, she got support from Democrat Chaim Deutsch and an endorsement from Donald Trump Jr. She won the election and became one of the few Republicans in a big group of City Council members.
She was the first Republican from Brooklyn since 2002. As a councilwoman, Vernikov arranged a rally against rules about COVID-19 vaccines at Gracie Mansion in Manhattan.
She also led a march against antisemitism after two Jewish teenagers were hurt for wearing Israel Defense Forces hoodies. When a law school supported boycotting Israel, she moved $50,000 away from the law school to Legal Services NYC.
She didn’t agree with the idea of adding more speed cameras in school zones in New York. However, reports in September 2022 showed she broke the speed limit many times in these zones and got a lot of tickets and other violations since 2020. In different situations, Vernikov made the news because of her choices.
She took back a donation she promised to the Museum of Jewish Heritage, saying they banned Florida Governor Ron DeSantis from their events. Later, she asked the leaders of the national Republican party to criticize Trump for hosting Kanye West and Nick Fuentes at his house, because she thought they made antisemitic remarks.
In March 2023, The New York Daily News said Vernikov used her work email to tell people about martial arts classes from Legion Self-Defense, a group she was in charge of. This caused concerns about what’s right and wrong.
Also, on October 13, 2023, she got in trouble for bringing a gun to a rally supporting Palestinians near Brooklyn College’s campus, even though it’s against the law in New York State.
Inna Vernikov Kissed By Stranger
In August 2023, something bad happened to Vernikov during an interview. A stranger kissed her without asking, which made her feel very uncomfortable. The man who did this wore a light blue hat and ran away quickly. But a camera caught a picture of his face.
Vernikov reported the incident to the authorities, and they started looking into it. They found out that this man had been in trouble with the law before for hurting others, drinking too much in public, and having illegal drugs like crack cocaine.
