Jaahnavi Kandula (age 23, 1999 – January 24, 2023) was an international student in America studying at Northeastern University. Kandula was run over by Seattle Police Officers on January 24, 2023, at the intersection of Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street.
The young woman was taken to the nearby hospital and died of fatal injuries. Jaahnavi was an extremely talented woman who came to the United States in 2021 for higher studies.
She wanted to fulfill her single mother’s dream and had a great future ahead of her, but due to the carelessness of Seattle Police Department officers, she died at a tender age.
Recently, bodycam footage was released that shows the moments before, during, and after the accident. In said video, Police officers who killed Kandula were seen laughing it off and downplaying the young woman’s death.
Jaahnavi Kandula’s Bodycam Footage released
On September 11, 2023, the Seattle Police Department made public a bodycam recording involving police officers in the tragic incident concerning Jaahnavi Kandula. In this footage, a seemingly cheerful police union leader from Seattle, Washington, was captured on his body camera uttering the words:
“She is dead,” Auderer says, then laughs. “No, it’s a regular person—yeah, yeah, just write a check, just, yeah,” he laughs again, “$11,000. She was 26 anyway, she had limited value.”
Additionally, the video revealed Daniel Auderer leaving the scene of a fatal accident where Officer Kevin Dave had struck and tragically killed Jaahnavi Kandula with his police cruiser while responding to a drug overdose call.
According to a copy of the internal investigation report, Auderer had been on the phone with Mike Solan, the President of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, shortly after departing from the accident scene, where he had conducted a standard sobriety check on the officer.
Auderer is reported to hold the position of vice president within the guild. It’s worth noting that the body camera had been “inadvertently” activated and recorded Auderer’s side of the conversation. According to Daniel’s account, Kandula had been in a crosswalk at the time of the incident.
However, an eyewitness contradicted this, stating that the young woman of Indian descent had not been walking within the crosswalk and had been thrown a distance of 40 feet due to the impact.
