Joel Madden (born on March 11, 1979, age: 43 years) is quite a successful musician; he has accomplished a lot in his life, entering into several new ventures and succeeding in almost all of them.
In 2022, he got a unique opportunity to be a part of the Paramount+ reality TV show, “Ink Master,” in which Madden is the New host of the show; it’s a 10-episode long season where tattoo artists compete with each other to showcase their talent to win the title of ‘Ink Master‘ and $250,000 cash prize.
Joel, for the first, is seen playing the host as well as the judge of the show, and there is quite a hype around it as the show has returned with its 14th season after a 2-year break. But Joel is not new to the TV screen and has been a part of a few reality shows; you will have to read on to know more.
Joel Rueben Madden, aka Joel Madden, was born in Waldorf, Maryland (on March 11, 1979) to his mother, Robin Marie Madden, and father, Roger Paul Combs; he has an elder brother, Josh Madden, and a younger sister, Sarah Madden, and an identical twin, Benji Madden.
Their father had left when they were all just kids; it was his mother that raised them all; they were faced with a lot of financial problems; they were eviction from their home, things like electricity, phone getting cut off, car breaking down and even running out of oil to keep warm, days would go by before the had the money to buy oil.
Things were complicated, but they stuck together as a family; Joel later changed his last name ‘Combs’ to his mother’s maiden name.
They all attended La Plata High School in La Plata, Maryland, and things began to look better as they grew up. The brothers began to take an interest in the music industry. Joel and Benji went to a Beastie Boys concert, and from there, their love for music grew, and they decided to start a band.
How Joel Madden’s musical journey began
Once the twins had completed their graduation in 1997, it was their mother who gave them a pair of airline tickets to California, where all the good punk rock bands started; this was just the inspiration they needed, and once they returned, they were determined to create a rock band.
At 16, Joel and his twin, along with a friend, started their band, but it was short-lived, and the Maddens eventually had to recruit fellow high schoolers Paul Thomas, Aaron Escolopio, and Billy Martin.
They together formed the band Good Charlotte; they took the name from a children’s book ‘Good Charlotte: Girls of the Good Day Orphanage.’ Joel was the pop-punk band’s lead vocalist; Benji was on the guitar and sang backing vocals.
Professional Music Journey
In 2001, Joel, along with his Good Charlotte band members, made a cameo in the film “Not Another Teen Movie,” they performed as a band at the school’s prom; he later did another cameo in the 2004 film “Fat Albert,” two years later in “Material Girls,” but this time along with his brother Benji.
Joel then had a guest appearance in Nickelodeon’s famous musical comedy series “The Naked Brothers Band,” where he joined the band for outstanding performance; Joel was also seen in the American TV series “Empire.” Madden also started a clothing brand MADE with his brothers Benji and Josh.
However, in 2006 was changed to DCMA Collective and was owned by the Madden brothers and a friend Tal Cooperman; they also have a production team called Dead Executives. The brothers have also entered the business world with their marketing company MDDN.co which launched Veeps 2 years ago, an app for artists who can manage their VIP offerings, ticketing, and fanbase; it’s a digital touring platform.
In 2011, Joel’s on-screen career had its breakthrough with the reality singing competition “The Voice,” he was seen as one of the four vocal coaches, and Benji later joined the show as a mentor. Joel continued to be the coach for 5 seasons and had to relocate to Sydney.
His coaching expertise earned him the Logie Award for Most Popular New Male Talent; he then joined the judging panel of the 11th annual Independent Music Awards and provided songwriting and production assistance to the band 5 Seconds of Summer in their first album; he has also written songs for their album Sounds Good Feels Good.
Joel Madden’s Wife & Kids
In 2004, Joel began dating Hilary Duff, who is an American actress and at that time a teen idol; they had a huge age gap; Joel was 25, and Duff was just in her teens (16); they, however, did not last long, they called off their relationship in, November 2006.
The same year, Madden began dating Nicole Richie, a television personality and fashion designer; they have 2 children, a daughter, Harlow Winter Kate, born in 2008; a year later, they had a little boy, Sparrow James Midnight Madden.
Joel and Nicole got engaged in February 2010 and married on December 11, 2010. Madden and his wife founded The Richie Madden Children’s Foundation, a charity that creates and promotes an online registry to assist in purchasing products for needy mothers and their children.
