All About Bankruptcy Judge David Jones
David Jones (age 61, born in 1962) is a well-known judge who has been handling cases in the Southern District of Texas for more than 12 years.
He started as a bankruptcy judge in this district and took the oath for this position on September 30, 2011. Later, in 2015, he was appointed as the chief judge, which was an honorable role.
Recently, news came out about Judge Jones resigning from his important position as the chief bankruptcy judge in the Southern District of Texas. This decision follows a week where there was a lot of talk about Judge Jones and some controversies.
Sources shared that there were claims about a secret romantic relationship between David Jones and attorney Elizabeth Freeman.
Elizabeth had previously worked as his law clerk and later became a partner at Jackson Walker, a well-known law firm based in Texas. This law firm had cases that were presented before Judge Jones.
David Jones Dating Elizabeth Freeman
In a previous interview, David openly discussed his romantic journey. He shared that prior to joining the judiciary, he was married. However, he’s no longer married at present.
During the interview, he revealed that his former spouse disagreed with his decision to leave a lucrative position at a law firm to pursue a judicial role with a lower salary.
This difference in career paths may have contributed to the end of their marriage. Currently, David is in a committed relationship and resides with Elizabeth Freeman.
Allegations Against Judge David Jones
After facing accusations of approving more than $1 million in legal fees for work on 16 corporate cases between 2018 and 2022, done by his partner Elizabeth Freeman, a bankruptcy attorney based in Texas, David Jones chose to resign from his position.
Elizabeth Freeman, who had previously worked as Jones’ law clerk for six years, had a secretive relationship with him for quite some time, as highlighted in a recent complaint filed against Jones, which referred to Freeman as his live-in girlfriend. During this time, Freeman’s law firm, Jackson Walker, billed over $6 million from those cases.
Freeman went on to start her own firm, The Law Office of Liz Freeman, in December 2022, after leaving Jackson Walker. Jones, recognized for overseeing significant Chapter 11 cases for big names like JCPenney, Neiman Marcus, and Denbury Resources, continuously denied being in a romantic relationship with Freeman, despite living together in a property valued at over $1 million since 2017.
The ownership of the property was confirmed in a survivorship agreement linked to its deed, naming both Jones and Freeman as owners. The agreement clearly stated that if one person passed away, the other would inherit the property.
Shortly after their relationship was publicly disclosed through the complaint against Jones, the judge confirmed to a news outlet that indeed, he had been in a long-standing relationship with Freeman.
David Jones Family Background
In 1962, David Jones (age 61) was born in North Carolina, America. His family had a unique story – his mom was a dedicated elementary school teacher for an impressive 43 years, and his grandpa was really good at upholstering furniture.
Surprisingly, there were no lawyers in his family, making David’s path quite different. After he finished his engineering degree at Duke University in 1983, he began his career. At first, he worked for a big defense company, where he helped design chips for missile guidance systems.
A year later, he made a big move to Dallas, Texas, to study for an MBA at Southern Methodist University. He graduated in 1986 and shifted to working in the field of accounting, showing how adaptable and eager he was to grow in his career.
Gave Up High Paying Job to Become Judge
In 1987, David Jones had a big opportunity. He was asked to design a system to help lawyers handle a complicated legal situation involving about 120 developers, appraisers, and bankers.
This was about a savings and loan scam related to condominiums, a type of housing. During this project, he got to work with really good lawyers, like Richard “Racehorse” Haynes from Houston.
This experience inspired him to decide to become a lawyer too. About a year and a half later, he went to the University of Houston Law Center to study law. He wanted to be a bankruptcy lawyer who could stand on his own and do well. After finishing law school, he joined Kirkendall & Isgur, a law firm.
He wanted to be a lawyer who argued cases in court often, and this firm gave him that chance. In 2011, a judge named Jerry Smith encouraged David Jones to become a bankruptcy judge in the Southern District of Texas.
This was a great chance to work with his mentor, Isgur, who was the chief judge at that time. Interestingly, David was making a lot of money at the law firm, more than a million dollars each year.
But he chose to be a judge, even though it meant earning way less, about $160,000 per year. For over ten years, David Jones was in charge of many cases and made important changes in the legal system.
Many people in the legal world agree that Judge Jones made a big difference in the way business bankruptcies were handled in Texas. Before, a lot of this work used to go to other places like Delaware and Manhattan, but he helped bring it back to Texas.
