Who was Maggie Murdaugh?

Maggie Murdaugh (September 15, 1968 – June 7, 2021, death age: 52 years) was the wife of Richard “Alex” Murdaugh, the descendent of South Carolina’s famous family. On June 7, 2021, everybody got shocked when it came to light that Maggie and her younger son, Paul Murdaugh, were brutally murdered at their family hunting lodge, Moselle.

Soon after discovering the murder, Alex called 911; a few minutes later, police reached the scene and found that the mother and son had been shot multiple times.

Those days Alex, Mag’s hubby, was facing a financial crisis, and the demise of his wife and kid made everybody feel bad for him, but when the case investigation began, he was considered the prime suspect, and it became a case of State Vs. Alex Murdaugh.

What Happened On the Day of Murder?

After South Carolina lawyer Richard Alexander Murdaugh, aka Alex, was accused of killing his wife and kid, the Murdoch family’s tale gained national attention. But what happened on the day of the murder? Let’s discuss this.

According to the written records, on June 7, 2021, Alexander called the police later at 10:00 p.m. and reported that he found his spouse Maggie and son, Paul, dead near a dog kennel at their family lodge in Islandton.

When cops reached the crime scene, they asked Alex where he was before coming to the lodge, and he told them that he was at his parents’ home taking care of his father, who was ill then.

Most people believed the old lawyer because of his family’s clean reputation, but when police started investigating, some fishy facts began popping up, and 4 months after the incident, SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) declared Richard as a person of interest.

State Vs. Alex Murdaugh

The SLED chief, Mark Keel, wanted to create a strong case, so he first collected enough evidence and then demanded the court issue arrest warrants against Murdaugh. Thirteen months after the murder, Colleton County Grand Jury issued orders for Alexander’s indictment charging him with two counts of murder and possession of weapons.

The investigators accused the senior lawyer of murdering Maggie with a rifle and Paul with a shotgun. The prosecution revealed that the relationship between Alex and Mag was going through a rough patch which is why the lady was living at the beach house.

One day Murdaugh called Maggie and told her to meet him at the Moselle; the lady was uncomfortable meeting him at the lodge and wanted the meeting to happen at a public place. She even texted her friend, saying the man was acting fishy.

Eventually, Margaret reached the place where she met Paul near the dog kennel. The prosecution believes that Richard shot his family members to gain sympathy because those days, he was going through a financial struggle, and everybody knew about it.

State prosecutors have also presented a t-shirt that Alex wore on June 7; reportedly, it bears high-velocity blood spatter. An audio file has also come to light; as per the sources, it was recorded a few hours before the murder, and in it, Alexander can be heard talking to Paul and Maggie.
