Early Life & Parents
On March 12, 1981, Nikko Hurtado was born in San Fernado Valley to a Mexican father who was a welder by profession and a Hispanic mother, a homemaker; he grew up drawing cartoons and characters just for fun.
When he turned 16, his love for painting shifted, and Nikko and his lifelong buddy Mike DeMasi began taking art lessons at the Art Center of Pasadena. He stayed for several years until deciding to drop out and do something more economical, so he went into the line of construction.
For the next three years, he did hard labor, and in 2002, his life began changing when he hopped into Art Junkies Tattoo Studio to check on his friend Mike, who had been tattooing for quite some time.
Mike offered Nikko an apprenticeship because he knew how much Hurtado liked art, and he agreed immediately. However, his only experience with tattoos was seeing them on gang or prison members, and he had never had a tattoo himself at the time.
How did Nikko Hurtado Become a Tattoo Artist?
After a year, Nikko did a tattoo that changed his life forever; it was a colored portrait of Batman, it was his first ever attempt at a color portrait, and the client loved it so much that he entered it into the Pomona Tattoo Portrait Contest and won the first place.
It was one of the many awards he had collected over the years, but that portrait put him on the map; the image was all over the tattoo community; it was even faster than any social media back then; Nikko became the go-to artist for color portraits.
He began to refine his skills even further, making his tattoos look so realistic; he specialized in portraits and realism; he was also seen in various TV shows like “LA Ink,” “Tattoo Wars,” “Tori & Dean,” and “Ink Master,” he has also had the opportunity to tattoo celebrities like, Drake, Diddy, The Game, Fred Durst, Dwane “The Rock” Johnson, Guillermo Diaz, Kat Von D and many more.
In between his career boom, he started Black Anchor Collective tattoo studio in 2009, and a few years later, he hit a critical milestone. He had his first solo art show, “Renati,” to his name, which focused primarily on oil artworks; he made a debut with a series of paintings at the Corpro Gallery in Santa Monica, CA, in front of acclaimed critics.
