Mumbai Indians Player Tilak Varma Biography
Tilak Varma (born on November 8, 2002) is 19 years old all-rounder from Hyderabad, India, who became a topic of talk after landing in the Mumbai Indians Franchise after the IPL 2022 auctions. The selectors of MI brought him to play for their team after paying INR 1.70 crore.
He played his first IPL match on March 27, 2022, against Delhi Capitals held at Brabourne Stadium. It was DC who won the toss and decided to field first. From MI’s side, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan came as openers.
With continuous sixes and fours, the opening duo quickly collected the first 100 runs. Varma came to bat at number four and scored 22 runs off 15 balls, courtesy of 3 beautiful boundaries. Sadly, MI lost the match, and DC chased the target when ten balls were left.
To play the second IPL game, the Mumbai team came to Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, situated in Navi Mumbai. Here they had to face Rajasthan Royals, one-time IPL champions.
The referee conducted the toss, and MI made RR bat first after winning the toss. Jos Buttler and Yahsasvi Jaiswal came to lead the batting line. But the youngster Jaiswal went to the pavilion early because of a catch caught by Tim David.
In the end, Rajasthan was able to set a target of 194 runs with Sanju Samson’s cracking sixes, Shimron Hetmyer’s quick 35, and Jos Buttler’s century over 65 balls.
Indians started their batting with the same batting setup with Rohit and Ishan Kishan, but with the early fall of Sharma’s wicket, things got tricky. Anmolpreet Singh came at number 3, but he also returned to the dugout after scoring mere five runs.
Tilak had to make runs with Ishan standing on the opposite side of the pitch. Varma focused on playing his natural game and scored back-to-back sixes, including a beautiful reverse sweep. He also scored some beautiful sweep shots, not only on lofted shots.
Sadly, the experienced Ravichandran Ashwin, with his tricky ball, bowled him and Varma left the ground after scoring a much-needed 61 runs on 33 balls. Again Mumbai Indians lost the match by 23 runs even after the beautiful innings from the youngster of Hyderabad.
Tilak Varma Wants To Buy a Home for Parents
Tilak Varma (age 19) was born on November 8, 2002, into a lower-middle-class household in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. Nagaraju, his father, is an electrician, and Gayatri, his mother, is a housewife. Tilak’s father struggled to cover his coaching expenditures due to his meager earnings. They didn’t even own a home and lived in a rented property, adding to Mr. Nagaraju’s modest earnings.
Tilak also has an elder brother who, unlike him, was interested in badminton and even played Nationals but had to give up to pursue his Engineering studies. Now with Rs. 1.70 Crore cricket wants to give his parents a lovely home and all the luxuries of life.
Beginning of Cricket Career
In an interview with Times of India, Tilak’s 52 years old father said that the youngster has been getting proper coaching since he was 12. Daily he used to get up early at 4 a.m. and rush towards his academy, which was 30 km from their home. The little boy was not afraid to struggle, and in this fight to become the best, his coach Mr. Salam Bayash was with him.
Varma sometimes used to stay at Salam’s house due to lengthy training sessions. In 2018 at the age of 16, he debuted in first-class and played his first Ranji match on December 30, 2018.
In that match, he played against Andhra but could not do well in the first innings, but in the second innings, he made 34 runs with six crisp boundaries. The following year, he landed himself a spot on Hyderabad’s team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament.
The world cup was coming, and his coach, who knew the tournament’s importance, started preparing Tilak for the trials. When in 2019, the BCCI announced the names for the U-19 World cup, there was Varma’s name on the list, and his childhood dream to play for India in under-19 became a reality.
In 2022, the Left-handed batsman joined the IPL tournament after Nita Ambani’s team managers noticed how talented is the Hyderabadi guy. There was a battle between different franchises for Varma, but in the end, MI paid 1.7 crore rupees and won the bid.
