The guarantee hearing unfolded in La Espiga, located in the La Chorrera district of Panama. Paula Garcés, the prosecutor of the Panama Oeste Homicide and Femicide Section of the Public Ministry, affirmed that investigations into this deeply distressing incident are already underway.

On Tuesday, November 7, Kenneth Darlington was running errands in the La Chorrera district when he unexpectedly encountered a series of roadblocks. As Darlington approached a roadblock on the Inter-American highway near Punta Chame, he made a peculiar statement to his companions in the car, saying, “This ends today,” increasing the tension in the situation.

Darlington exited his car and sought to engage with the protest leaders but insisted on speaking only to men, excluding women. Though there were few men present, three individuals attempted to interact with him in an effort to defuse the situation.

However, events took a tragic turn. Kenneth engaged in a heated argument with the protesters, which eventually led to him firing his gun multiple times. He chillingly uttered, “This is the end of the problem” as he did so, leaving victims in his wake.

Subsequently, Darlington removed evidence from the scene and returned to his car, leaving his companions in shock. When they inquired about the events, he casually admitted, “Yes, I killed one and shot another.”

Interestingly, Darlington referred to one of his companions as his wife, ‘Yessica Uribe,’ suggesting a level of detachment from the gravity of the situation. Despite his suggestion to depart, Uribe firmly responded, “We’re not leaving.”

In response to the gunfire, Darlington’s partner took swift action, contacting the National Police and dialing 911 for assistance. The police responded promptly, apprehending Darlington as he attempted to reload his firearm.

Regrettably, despite medical efforts, one victim, Abdiel Díaz Chávez, lost his life at the scene. Another victim, Iván Rodríguez Mendoza, 62, was rushed to a clinic in San Carlos but arrived without any signs of life. Both victims were teachers, adding another layer of sadness to this tragic incident.

The case is ongoing, and there is even talk of a third injured person who remains hospitalized. The victims’ connection to the education field makes this situation even more startling.

During the hearing, Darlington’s defense declared an appeal. The next chapter of this story will unfold on Wednesday, November 15, at 8:30 am when the Superior Court of Appeals convenes to handle this appeal.
