In 1971, Glenn Kelman was born in Seattle to his mother, Linda Kelman, and father, Lloyd Kelman. His mother, Linda worked as a nurse, and his father, Lloyd was an engineer; he also had a twin brother, Wesley Kelman; it was them who influenced Glenn the most; they gave him the confidence to be different, and his brother joined in on his goofiness and was always by his side, encouraging and supporting him.

He began his education at Interlake High School, Bellevue; he was pretty good at soccer and was also made captain of their school’s chess team.

Kelman tried his luck at being a writer for a year, but that didn’t go well; he ran out of money and fortune, so he started delivering packages on a bicycle. That’s when he met a few guys who had just started a software company, Stanford Technology Group; as it was a relatively new company at that time, he was the first of the few employees to be hired; he worked as a Product Manager, doing a little of everything, be in marketing, sales and engineering, it was like a boot camp, but for an entrepreneur.

This job was a stepping stone to success as he became the co-founder of Plumtree Software, along with Kirill Sheynkman and Joe McVeigh. Glenn worked 90 hours a week and did every little job for his company except sales; at different times, he led engineering, marketing, product management, and business development; he also was responsible for financing and general operations during the early days at Plumtree.

He gave 7 years of his life here, becoming the VP of Marketing & Product Management. By 2005, Glenn had started with Redfin; his only focus was to grow in the marketplace, not as a brokerage.

Things changed after he realized that a business could only succeed when transformed into something extraordinary; sure, there were risks. Still, he was willing to take the fall for everything; he went ahead and David Eraker, the founder of Redfin, to combine real estate with software; that is how this technology-powered real estate brokerage company grew to become what it is today, now Glenn has been working at Redfin for 17 years and is still a part of it as its President & CEO.
